I've decided to buy a computer and after some research I think I'm going for the Suunto Mosquito. So give me everything you got on it!!!!! The good, the bad and the ugly!!!

Before we proceed:
1-I'm a new diver who pretends that all equipment bought lasts forever.
2-Most of my dives will be done in warm, tropical waters.
3-I'm open to other alternatives.

Thank you in advance.:)

1 - a. It won't.
b. You wouldn't want it to, anyway. No more new stuff??? ;)
2 - lucky you.
3 - now that's a good attitude. :)

It would be easier to respond if we would know what you consider strong and weak points of the computer.

I dive a fairly similar computer, the DiveRite Nitec+, as a back up. It replaces the dive watch, is about the same small size as either my old watch or the Mosquito, so it's out of the way. The obvious downside is that the display of watch computers is tiny. This translates into hard to read and having to flip through several sreens to get all the info. As a primary that would be to much of a pita for me. Like the Mosquito, it has an excellent backlight.

I'd probably go with a Vyper. Not much of a price difference, same company, same deco model (if you ever get into deco), larger display, option of gauge mode.

There is no better computer, or value, for rec diving than the Mosquito. It gives you everything you need to know and is very easy to operate. Comfortable to wear--small strap for wrist and extender for drysuit or thick wetsuit. Owner can replace the battery. It was my first choice for computer and I loved it!

The only thing it won't do is go into Gauge mode (bottom timer with depth, but no NDL calculations). This should only be a concern for those who plan to do decompression diving.

Enjoy it!

Let me start with the ugly. I have 51 dives under my belt, and 3 mosquitos. My first mosquito lasted for a totoal of 23 dives, then went into dive mode (at 16' in my computer room), and wouldn't recover. I took it back, and after two weeks, got a replacement, which was bad out of the box (backlight would either not come on or would flicker). I'm on my third one, now, and it hasn't given me any problems.

On the other hand, it's a really good computer. I just think they got a bad bunch. I wouldn't trade it for anything (except for a trimix computer, but that for down the road). I've run it against another computer (my backup, a datamax), and found the two computers to be right with each other for accuracy.

Despite the bad experience, I would recommend it.

I've had mine for a few years and a few hundred dives. I just gave it to my wife after my buddy gave me his Stinger (lucky guy got a new Titanium Stinger).

I love it. Its great for recreational divers. In fact, it functioned adequately as a backup timer for decompression diving.

I replaced the strap with an aftermarket one that loops back and forth, so as to avoid the extension strap required with the dry suit. You may not have that issue if you dive in a thin suit.

Its been great. No problems.

I would suggest the VYper...

For many reasons. GO to suunto's website and compare the two....

I dive a Stinger, very simular, only a metal case and a free/gauge mode.

I got it when I finished my Nitrox cert. The decompression model is pretty conservative. If you dive profiles above 60 ft and stay well within limits, you should be fine.

If you like to push things a little (or plan to) you might want to consider something else. Aeris Atmos AI or Atmos II might be good alternatives.

I love my Mosquito. Small, comfortable, easy to use and read. I bought it with the intent of wearing it as a watch also, but after my girlfriend freaked out about my no longer wearing the Tank watch she got me so many years ago I decided it is a little to big to wear as a watch anyway. ;) But, as a computer it's perfect.

Enter the interloper. I just got a Cobra. Three dives on it. I think I like it better. I'm sure I'm going to keep on wearing the Mosquito, mostly for ascent and the quick "Hey, am I sinking?" checks that I don't want to unclip the Cobra for... but hot-damn is that thing nice.

Have 112 dives in the last ten months and only problem was having to change a battery about 2 months ago, it was no problem at all. Only negative is how conservative it is especialy on repetative diving. I once borrowed another computer as a comparison and by the end of a 80 foot dive there was as much as 20 minutes difference. Conservative and all I love mine but if my eyes were much worse I may not feel the same about the size of display.
