Does anyone know what the comparable Bonaire/Dutch item would be to half & half in the US?

We always go to Van den Tweel for our first "big" grocery shopping excursion when we go to Bonaire - the first two years we ended up getting flavored liquid creamer (which is okay, but not our favorite). Last year a very nice local tried to help us in finding something suitable, but we ended up with just whole milk because I don't think he understood what half & half was.

This year, I was hoping to know the Dutch equivalent so we can truly enjoy our morning coffee. :)

Why not just get a little container of light cream, and whole milk... put a splash of both in your coffee and you're good to go (after all half-and-half is just half light cream and half whole milk...)

The Dutch standard is koffiemelk, a shelf-stable concentrated milk usually found in bottles or aseptic cartons near the coffee in Bonairean supermarkets. Regular koffiemelk is similar to cream and halfvolle koffiemelk has reduced fat content (more like half and half.)

You can also usually find regular half and half from the USA in the refrigerated dairy section at Vanden Tweel. Like most other refrigerated dairy products on Bonaire it's much more expensive than the shelf-stable counterparts.

Awesome, thank you! We tried finding half & half on our first trip and found nothing - so we gave up on other trips. We will look again this year, I'm happy to pay more. Will also look for the koffiemelk - will be fun to try something new. Thanks so much!

koffiemelk may be more like what we in the US call "evaporated milk." It's possible that our "half and half" is closer to lichteroom, which is simply "light cream."

Excellent, thanks for the replies! We are happy to try "light cream" - but even happier you provided the translation since we wouldn't have a clue when looking in the dairy case. :)
