You'll have to experiment with hose length and routing. I'm not a particularly large individual, and my BP/W puts the tank very close to the back of my head, so I like a short (26-28") primary hose. I think 30" is fairly typical, especially if you're using a standard BC which tends to put the tank valve low and further away from your head.

I'm going to try a 5 ft primary hose with a 22" alternate 2nd stage hose in the quasi-tech diver style. I have a feeling that's how I'll end up doing all my diving; it's a very clean streamlined routing, makes air sharing very convenient, and (so they say) eliminates any hose pulling on your mouth. If I ever end up actually working as a DM, I think I'll use the 5ft primary and a 39" alternate stowed neatly, which should cover either scenario in the event that a poorly trained panicked OOA diver lunges for one of my regs.
