Quoting Posts for Context

It can get very confusing following different discussion tracks in a threads with more than 20 replies. Connecting what a member writes with the post, or part of a post, can cause misunderstandings, arguments, and bewilderment. The simple solution is to preface your comments with the content you are replying to.

Quoting an Entire Post

The simplest option is to click Reply in the bottom lower-right corner of the post your comment or question relates to.

After adding your comment to the end of your reply, the post will look similar to this. A long quoted post will be compressed until you "Click to expand...".

Unfortunately, a long and complex post in this example will leave a lot of readers wondering what you are asking about.

Replying with a Partial Quote

Replying to an entire post may still not make the context of your comment or question clear. The other option is to quote only the part of the post your comment relates to. Partial quote are created by selecting the text of interest, waiting for the little menu to pop, and clicking Reply.

This will add the partial quote to the message editor below the posts.

This is an example of what a partial quote looks like. Note that all full and partial quotes includes the Author's username and a link to the quoted post.

Converting a Full Quote to a Partial Quote

Another option is to click Reply at the lower-right of every post and edit the message by deleting text that doesn't apply to the context of your post. However, you must be careful not to corrupt the BB code string or another member's message.

Using the Quote button in the toolbar

Clicking this button will insert a block quote that is similar to the quotes above but without the heading.

Example:

Another more techie option is to edit the BB-code from the above per the examples below:

The BB Code syntax is:

[QUOTE=A person]Something they said[/QUOTE]

Example:
[QUOTE="Jacques Yves Cousteau"] The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever. [/QUOTE]

Notice that the automatically inserted quote like this uses a variation on the same basic BB code:

The code for the above is below. Just substitute the values for the member you need.
[QUOTE="Neptune, post: 9507084, member: 6447"]Where can I get more information on that?[/QUOTE]

“ Changing a member's quote, beyond deleting text that is unrelated to you comment, is considered bad form. Intentionally modifying the quote in a way that changes the intended meaning or takes it out of context is unethical. ”

Multiple Partial and Full Quotes

Any number of full and partial quotes can be combined in one message using several different techniques. This a useful method to display the progression of quotes that sets the context for your reply.

The simplest involves employing the full and/or partial "Reply" in the desired sequence, typically the chronological order of the posts. The quoted text will be added to the editing box each time you do a "Reply".

+/-Quote

The other option is most useful when the quotes you want to include span two or more pages in the thread. This method employs the +/-Quote options.

This method adds a full quote:

:FAQtechnical: Technical Information
Dissecting BB code of a "Reply" quote can be intimidating but it is pretty easy if you break it down like this:

Keeping the automatically inserted BB code intact is the key to successfully quoting posts in your reply. Accidentally deleting one of the open or closed square brackets is the most common problem ScubaBoard members have.
