There are many of us that do make it full time. Talk to some of the local shops and see if they are hiring and at what rate. Look at maybe opening a small shop of your own or moving to a location that would support a career change. Did that 15 years ago and I have not looked back since.

Im assuming you are also a repair tech/ shop worker and earn your keep......But being JUST an instructor? No way.

There have been many discussions of this previously. I work as a full-time instructor, but then I work in a big resort where there is a steady stream (sometimes raging torrent!) of divers. I can do this because although my income is low, so are my outgoings. I have worked in the tourist industry for pretty much all of my professional career - Thailand, Egypt, Caribbean etc. In these locations, if you work hard, it is quite easy to make a sustainable living.

It is technically possible in the so-called "developed" (haha!) nations, but then you really want to be in an area where there is a lot of diving going on. If you are living in the middle of continental USA where you might be teaching diving in a local lake, it is going to be much harder to make a living simply because you are going to spending a lot more on your living expenses.

Most of the instructors I know in the UK wourk part-time in the evenings and weekends. The income from diving is simply not enough to sustain them (at all!), however those who are full-time employees of the local dive shop are salaried and hanging on in there, but they also have a lot more to do than just instructing.

Good luck whatever you decide... I love it! :D
