Hi there folks,

I have a quick question regarding the OW checkout dives. I was wondering if the full mask flood is just you taking it off and putting it back on, or if it was like the no mask regulator breathing for 1 minute in class? Any help is appreciated, as I am brushing up on my skills to get ready.

I had to remove replace and clear. I don't remember any 1 minute no mask breathing thing. I'm sure others will respond though.

Open Water Mask Removal and Replacement is just take it off and put it back on (at least it should be). If you are diving in a cold water enviroment I recommend flooding it slowly to get adjusted to the water. I've seen lots of students who rip it off in 45 degree water and attempt to head for the surface. Good luck.

quick answer, I had to take it off compleately. In the pool we had to swim with out the mask for a seperate drill.

The key is to know that it will be a shock to your system. To know that you can still breathe. To give yourself permission to have those firsts breaths be ragged gasps and to know that you will be all right.

It may be a tip and flood or it could be a R&R. Either is fair game in the real world.

As hard as it may be to believe the sensation can grow on you.

This is just a test. Next time your life may depend on it.

On BOW it was in pool and open water both; remove, pause, replace and clear by method of choice.

BTW I did BOW skills check up about 6 months ago that had several types. One was leave on and flood then clear 3 times, 3 different ways. Another was hover over the bottom, remove with eyes closed and set it down, turn around 360 degrees, find it again, replace and clear, again by 3 different ways, all while remaining inches from the bottom. That was hard, the finding it again part and I was laughing pretty hard by the time I did. Instructor said for him the best part was watching me stop, cock my head to one side and think of a way to back up, relocate a center point and figure out a way to grid search. Apparently I can’t even talk inside my head with out using my hands, and I was the first one to not just realize it was nearly futile after about 30 seconds and give up. I thought it was a real hoot.

When we did it we had to completly remove our mask to make it flood, put it back on our face and remove the water from our masks (by blowing, causing the water to come out the bottom of the mask).

We do remove/replace. No 1 minute, or even 1 second required. The skill is complicated enough with the OW student being in cold water for the first time, and having to deal with getting the mask on with a hood. And did I mention the gloves? :11: :eyebrow:
