OK, I'm learning about DIR style diving, and seen several photos of the long hose setup.

What worries me is this long hose usually seems to be wrapped around the divers neck.

Part of the reasoning I've seen for the long hose is because that's what a panicking diver is likely to grab. If it's wrapped around your neck, it doesn't look like a good idea to me to have to unwrap it and hand it to them.

Wouldn't a shorter hose that doesn't require wrapping be safer?

Thanks,

j.

It isn't actually all the way around your neck. It happns so quickly in this video that it may not be the best, but check here

If somebody grabbed your primary all you would have to do to deploy the entire length of hose is tuck your chin.

Another reason for donating your primary regulator is that you know it is working and your buddy needs air.

The hose is not "wrapped" anywhere - it loops behind the divers neck. Grab the reg, tip your head forward, and it slides off.

speaking or the way the hose runs, I am getting ready to buy a long hose and I remember there being a picture posted of the routing. does anyone know where that picture is?

It is not wrapped around the divers neck. Even if someone did pull it out of your mouth in an OOG (out of gas) situation, it still won't strangle you. It's hard to describe, but the long hose is completely safe.

The shorter hose would actually be unsafe in that it sticks out too far and is restrictive when dealing with OOG situations.

Thanks for the feedback, I think I understand it better now. Just looked a bit odd first time I saw it.

Definitely prefer the idea of donating my primary reg, and will try out the DIR style octo when I put my new gear together.

Cheers,

J.
