So in PADI DMs are employed as assistant instructors? I come from a world where these are two entirely different professionals, with different training and skills...
As already said, I first escalated all the training path of CMAS, up to 3-stars instructor, way before being ready to become a DM...
And I must say that working as a real DM in wonderful holiday resorts is much more satisfying (but also much more dangerous) than training novices.
In PADI a DM and an AI are different training and certification levels, with different things they can do.
Yes, the DM guides dives, but also, DMs are able to assist PADI Instructors with courses, from the PADI Open Water Diver course through to continuing education courses. However, a DM may not teach PADI core courses independently.
To do any teaching independently, you step up to AI.
 
OP: with the drysuit thing. What's stopping you from buying a drysuit now and diving the pants off it? Wearing thicker undergarments will feel different but the principles of dry suit operation are the same...

Water temps in Oki are more of a 3mm environment.
