Heh, I can handle hot and buggy. I've lived in southern Alabama for the last 20 years, and there's not a huge temperature difference in the summer. Doesn't mean I particularly enjoy it, though. Is there a place you'd recommend for the beginning of the season over the Keys? Primitive (cheap) lodging nearby is a plus, but not necessary. Given the timeframe I have to work with, I can swing pretty much anything.

Outside the keys, not really, at least definitely nothing to snorkel, miles and miles out diving sure but...yeah. As far as in the keys, I've heard from some friends that big pine has been producing pretty well the past few years. Haven't been myself but the beginners i know are apparently limiting out. This is all in recent years though, no guarantees from one year to the next obviously. We haven't changed our typical spot cause we have so many numbers, both fishing and lobstering, for around Marathon that we so far have figured we are better off with what we know than going down to Big Pine blind. But for your case, you don't really have an old stomping ground so something new is no different.
You call yourself an engineer and you're not going on Spring Break to South Beach with calipers to do precision ta-ta measurements at the wet t-shirt competitions?

Hmmmm. This isn't exactly what you asked, but I wrote some reports from the perspective of the first time I visited Florida for lobster hunting. I was on boats though. Still, my point was to give advice as a first time visitor discovered it, so it might help some. Now I'm still not allowed to put up links so you're going to have to figure out what the URL is from what I can put. About 3/4 down on the main page are about 6 or 7 reports about the Florida bug diving. . Or you can Google on "Lobster Hunting" and the first return is my seahunt site and you can go from there.

Not many dive boats in the Keys do lobster trips because they must have a commercial sportfishing license for their boat, and it's expensive.
We have our boat licensed and we offer lobster hunting and spearfishing trips. We are a 6-passenger only operation so you have plenty of room both on the boat and in the water. Another advantage to the passengers is that you do not need to purchase a temporary non-resident fishing license, you can lobster from on our license.Check our our website link below. Great to see you on the board. As I mentioned to you, it is now a bit of a daily obsession with me. My son Adam has to suffer the loss of his dad a few minutes each day to the black hole of ScubaBoard. Call me whenever convenient regarding our last discussion. I have already presented it to the organizers of the Fiji Conference and they have some concerns. I, however, think it a good idea.

sure there is, under the bridges, some of the channels, rock quarries, and there are even some coral heads relatively close to shore.
finding lobster in march is not all that hard, they are on the reef right now. my guess is avoiding the cold bay water. not sure how they are close to shore and under the bridges. i know alot of people get lobster off the bridge pilings during mini season.
i'm more than willing to help you out with some numbers and locations down here in the keys.
and hell if the weather is nice enough, we can get out on my boat.
i even have some spearguns to loan out.
