Very cheap is the Hostelito just off the main Plaza, which has dorm-style rooms as well as a private room that you may reserve. It's a few blocks north of Aldora's pier.

The Pepita and Bahia are good options, and there's the Hotel Aguilar across the street from the Bahia at $40/night -- mini fridge in room and small pool out back. On the waterfront, Safari Inn costs in the $50 range year round.

You won't have street noise in Bahia's cheapest rooms but they are very dark, facing (as Steve says) a brick wall.

Many dive op options downtown if you prefer an AL80-tank operator and approx. 1-hour bottom times. Small groups to be had with Blue XTSea, Aqua Safari's fast boat Belinda -- reserve if you want either of these two because they sell out -- and others.

Safari Inn is located above the Aqua Safari dive shop on the waterfront between Calles 5 & 7 Sur. Basic, large, clean, 14 rooms, no elevator, good AC, round the clock security, free wifi, plenty of bottled water. All rooms are the same price, so request an ocean view (2 front-facing rooms.) You can also request a fridge. If the fridge is taken, they'll gladly give you an ice chest. No phone or TV in room. Book through Cozumel Diving with Aqua Safari Photos of rooms on website.

Thank you everyone for the answers.

I've checked a number of websites for prices and availability based on your recommandations, Bahia suites didn't seem available for my stay but I found a good deal for Vista del Mar (via ebookers): less than USD 330 for a 7 night stay in an ocean view room with balcony.
It would have been USD 100 cheaper to stay in a private room at the Hostelito, but the Vista throws in a Horseback ride as well as a 15% discount on food and drinks at Mr Sancho's beach… Which is where Aldora Divers do their SI, so that will come in handy.

I've emailed Aldora telling them about my vacation dates and specific needs, hopefully they'll have a spot for me.

I'll be there Dec. 6th-13th, hope I'll get to meet some of you on the island.

Good bubbles to all

I have also stayed at Vista del Mar it is a very nice hotel....no elevator....makes a difference when you are dragging dive gear up to the top floor :-) but still very nice....some street noise but the a/c usually drowns it out....I would stay there again...they do offer continental breakfast just let them know the day before

Hi, Ann.

If she dives with Aldora or BlueXTSea she won't have to worry about dragging gear up the stairs other than maybe once or twice since they will rinse and store her gear all week.

I've stayed at Vista del Mar twice and find it to be a good value in a good location with the downtown pier just a block and a half away.

I just got an answer from Aldora and made a reservation with them. I am SO excited, can't wait !!!
Now all I gotta do is a search to find the best tacos in town and I'll be all set for the Coz part of my trip.

Tacos pastor at El Pique on 30th across from the San Francisco market. Yum! They don't open until 6:30 or 7 pm though.

Also, my wife is 5' 3" and slender and always got cold wearing her 3mm suit in Coz. She now has a 5mm and is much warmer and enjoys the diving even more than before. If you get cold easily then go with a 5mm and maybe a hood too.

You're going to have a great trip!

I have stayed at both hotels pepita and bahia....Pepita does have a courtyard to hang out in and is off the main plaza away from the main street....I did not notice any road noise from Bahia...both are great places to stay...

In Dec the water is cooler and so is the air....I usually wear a full 3mm with a beanie and I am comfortable....but a 5mm would probably work for you if you chill easily...bring something like a windbreaker w/hood for the boat rides the air can chill you after a dive....

several ops pick up downtown...not sure about LU....BlueXT also picks up downtown...they are an excellent op...Cozumel Diving: Blue XT SEA Diving, Cozumel Mexico

I will be there in Jan staying at Alicia's B&B also a great cheap place to stay and it includes breakfast daily Alicias Bed and Breakfast Cozumel Mexico/Cozumel Diving/Cozumel Hotel/Cozumel Scuba/Cozumel Snorkel they are a little farther back in the "hood" but about a 3 min cab to the pier...and a short walk to restaurants...

If your diving with Aldora there is no need to bring a windbreaker. They are provided on the boat.

Another vote for Aldora here as we have been diving with them for about 10 years. While we have tried others, Aldora is always our first choice. In fact, will see them in............8 days..............

yes...that was already mentioned in another post....BlueXT as well as some others provide windbreakers as well....I bring one anyway to wear walking to and from the boat if it is raining
