Here a question for the books. My brother and his wife went to the LDS to talk about classes. It's 350 their. The guy at the shop said why don't just your wife take the class then go with her after she is already certified. Now correct me if I'm wrong but that's CRAZY advice. Don't all people have to be certified to go diveing. I mean you learn valuable tools on what to do in an emergency. What do you think:tribute:

Your BS detector was correct...that is crazy talk.

I wouldn't advise diving w/o certification, but it's not required. You'd be hard-pressed to find a shop that will give you air or rent you equipment, but if your spouse is certified, that would eliminate that problem. The advice was bad, but not incorrect.

I agree bad diving advice as well as business advice.

Who in their right mind would tell a customer, naw, don't spend money here..

That's one of the scariest things I've heard about any LDS. Make sure that you tell your brother that he and his wife BOTH need to get certified...SOMEWHERE ELSE!

For the safety of other divers, the situation merits some investigation. Call the shop anonymously and ask if they will give air fills/rent gear to you without being certified. If they are a PADI or NAUI endorsed shop, I bet they could be shut down for that, and probably should be!

Also, I REALLY wouldn't trust any instructor that would work for a place like that...I can only imagine what essential skills might get "skipped" in the course.

This is the worst advise I ever heard !!!!

You should inform their agency and close them down !

Imagine that during a dive something goes wrong with the certified wife....how will the non certified husband be able to help her ????

OMG they are stupid !!!!

Tell to your brother that he should never visit this LDS again! NEVER !

I knew somethig was fishy about that advice. I think I will give them a call and ask about the air fill. Good thinking Otter- cat. One thing that sucks about it is their the only dive shop for about 50 miles. I'm pretty sure their PADI. MAybe I'll have to give them a call if the air thing pans out.

I dove for years without being certified, it wasnt the smartest thing, and I found that after taking the classes nad getting my certifacation alot of things that I had trouble with werent trouble any longer. So my opinion is very bad advise, and also you cannot buy, rent, or get your bottles filled without a certifacation. So every where you would go you would be depending on someone else. And you couldn't do a dive trip because your DM should be checking your cert. and cert level.

Of course it is bad advice. I want to play devil's advocate here.

It is feasible that the person giving the advice was not an instructer and did not officially represent the position of the store. It may have been just someone trying in a very poor way to save them money.

Also, I have NEVER been asked to see my cert card when taking my tank in to be filled, VIPed, or hydro'd. I have never been asked to see my cert card when I've purchased items, either.

I have been to many dive shops, not just one. I have even taken dive trips where I have not been asked to present my card, just for my card number.

All of that being said, diving is a wonderful sport and is worth the investment of both people to enjoy a lifetime of wonderment.

Maybe the guy in the shop just wanted to get rid of the husband. As an lds I will gladly and properly sell you anything you want without a card, except air. After we visual a tank we fill it so you need a card to get it back.
