Im really interested in buddy - buddy communication and wireless links between equipment. Anyone know what the average range would be with something like the Ocean Reef stuff? Im guessing this would be pretty dependable on conditions and salinity of the water etc.

Im also really interested in the Suunto's Vytec pressure transmitter. how did they get round this as i thought data transmission through water was almost impossible!

The range of the ocean reef stuff is fairly limited and in my experience it doesn't offer good enough sound quality (to say it diplomatically) to be used for much of anything. You spend so much time say things like 'HUH' 'WHAT' 'SAY AGAIN' that you would probably mistake the death throws of your buddy as an attempt to talk.

As for the wireless transmitters the range is about 1 or 2 metres max and the signal is easily disturbed.

I have only used the Ocean Reef comms. while doing an evaluation on the mask, max distance was about 25 meters and the units worked fine.

OTS makes some more powerful units capable of much farther transmission range, it depends on whether your planning to talk to only your buddy or to the vessel as well. No reason to go with a more powerful (and expensive) unit if not needed...

Check out the OTS website, you can get a ton of very good information on communications in general.

Great company to deal with for purchase of a variety of mask designs as well...
