Thanks for your comments, in reply :
I have not attended a DIRF course up here in Canada, but I have two friends who have, and the message we got on Backplate and wings was prestty clear "if it ain't Halcyon it ain't DIR" . This is second hand however, so I accept your comment about Diverite wings.

I purchased a Diverite Transpac II, a soft pack, because I liked a soft pack but I converted it to a backplate and wing with STA, because it was more stable. I still use a sternum strap though (NOT DIR).
I also have a release on my left shoulder strap (NOT DIR) It makes getting in and out of my gear easier. I know it's a potential failure point. ( I'm willing to risk it).

On the topic of failure points: I have also added a 90° swivel at the second stage end of my 7 ft long hose. I found the DIR hose routing created a torque that was uncomfortable on my mouth piece. The 90° swivel allows the hose to bend a lilttle towards the back of my neck and is more comfortable. It works for me!

In answer to your numbered items;

1)Remove the ball on the bottom dump." I have shortened the cord, but not removed it all together, In a head down position, it it still advantageous to be able to dump.

2) Shorten the inflator hose." NOT DONE, I am very large (50 inch chest)and I need the long inflator hose, I use a velcro strap above my chest D ring around the inflator and wip hose to restrain it.

3)Remove the pull dump. This is a failure point! NO Thanks. This is a feature I like and use. I'm willing to live with the risk.

4) Protect the inner bladder from the zipper better." My DiveRite rec wing, have a 2 inch wide flap on the inside to separate the zipper from the bladder. I have seen the inner tube mod before, this is a good idea, but I don't think it's nessessary for non-penitration diving.

As I stated: I believe there are usually more than one way to do things effectively. I personly believe the DIR system to be too rigid. It has many good attributes though.

best regards

Drew, no problem. Glad it helped.

Mike D,
You could be right. I have always been told that other wings could be used, if they met certain requirements. Who knows? Of course, everyone has their own opinion on what is DIR. I was basically just going on what I have been told from some folks at EE.

I've been involved in 3 DIR classes in one capacity or another, and the message was clear-

They were not selling or advocating for ANY particular equipment manufacturer. As long as the equipment met the requirements, the instructors did not have a problem with it. They don't care if it's Halcyon, DiveRite, FredT, or whatever.

Thanks for the tips on the light cord - don't really want to shorten the cord because a) knowing my luck I will flood the torch and the manuafacturer is not represented out here b) I use it for photography so play with how far away I put the light.

Will certainly look for somewhere to tuck it when stowed though...

Cheers
Jonathan

It certainly is....but what does that have to do with retaining the ball?

Mine dumps just fine that way, but without the risk of the ball becoming entrapped and inadvertently venting the wing.

That is EXACTLY the same message I got. The equipment should meet certain requirements, and as long as it does our instructors didnt care what BRAND it was. They did compare our different equipment and point out things that made some better and some worse than others, but no one in our class was told "you cant' dive that because it's not DIR!"

It really saddens me to see the disputes some people engage in regarding what is DIR and what is not. Some of the silliest have even involved the COLOR of the gear!!! As long as the color doesnt affect the performance, who cares???
