I am transitioning into North Atlantic diving and am seriously considering switching from a standard BC to a BP/W. I am trying to think through how to best set myself up and was wondering where to put everything without pockets. Is everything just hanging off attached to a D-ring with a bolt snap, or is there a more streamlined way to go?

Where do you carry, attach, or otherwise stow:

lights, primary and backup
knife
reel
smb
lift bag
signal mirror/whistle/etc.
2nd reg (octo/pony)

Thanks!

The bag can clip to the plate along the side or even over you butt.

The knife can go on your leg with another cutting tool like shears on a haness D-ring.

The rest is probably no different than on a BC.

My wife just mat the switch and it was simple transplant of accessories.

I like medium bolt snaps and stainless split rings (like those spiral key rings) for many of my clip-offs.

lights, primary and backup If you use backup lights which have a reasonably slender body, you can clip them to the chest d-rings and have them sit along the harness, secured at the bottom with a piece of inner tube or surgical tubing. A lot of people diving cold water and low viz use canister lights for a primary. The canister rides on the waist belt, and the light head sits on your hand. If you are using a big hand-held light, you really have no good option other than to clip it off and have it dangle when it is not in use.

knife A lot of knives are sold with sheaths that will slide onto 2" webbing. The knife can ride just to the left of your buckle, on your left-hand waist strap. That way you can reach it with either hand, and it won't fall off.

reel I was taught to carry my reel on my left hip D-ring, although you can also clip it off to your butt d-ring.

smb You can clip this off to your butt d-ring, or put it in bungies along the bottom of your plate.

lift bag Some plates will accept a storage pack for lift bags, where the bag rides behind your back.

signal mirror/whistle/etc. These are the kinds of small items that really do better in a pocket.

2nd reg (octo/pony) If you don't want to use a long hose/bungied backup system, you can clip your pony or octo reg off to one of your chest d-rings. This puts it in the "golden triangle", although a stressed diver may be further stressed by finding that the reg won't just pull free. You can probably work up some kind of breakaway system, or something using an elastic band, where you can clip the holder to your chest d-ring but put the reg into the breakaway part.

Most of us try to keep our rigs as clean and streamlined as we can (since that's part of the appeal of the BP/W system in the first place, and is critical for penetration/overhead diving) which is why we use pockets, to minimize the stuff hanging off.

I got a small pouch with a velcro cover that attaches to the lower tank band. In it I put all my rescue stuff sans whistle, which is attached to the retractor with my SPG. The pouch holds the stuff that I hope to never use: Sausage/SMB, reflector, emerg. strobe, thumb reel.

This keeps all this stuff from getting in the way. I tuck the pouch tight between my tank and the wing to reduce drag. And on the lower band, left side it's easiy to reach. Deco bottle is slung on my right under my arm.

Just my way.

I will piggyback on several of Lynne's excellent comments, with my additions in red.
lights, primary and backup If you use backup lights ... you can clip them to the chest d-rings and have them sit along the harness, secured at the bottom with a piece of inner tube or surgical tubing (or a piece of bungee cord tied around the should strap). A lot of people diving cold water and low viz use canister lights for a primary. The canister rides on the waist belt, and the light head sits on your hand. One of my regrets is buying gear was waiting so long to buy a can light. It is a delight to be free of heavy, handheld lights. While many attach their light as Lynne describes, I attach mine (inverted) to the bottom right of my BP.
knife A lot of knives are sold with sheaths that will slide onto 2" webbing. The knife can ride just to the left of your buckle, on your left-hand waist strap. I put my shears on my waist webbing on the right side, partially because I attach my can light to my backplate, rather than putting it on my waist band on the right.
reel I was taught to carry my reel on my left hip D-ring, although you can also clip it off to your butt d-ring. I attach my reel to my right hip D-ring.
smb You can clip this off to your butt d-ring, or put it in bungies along the bottom of your plate. I use bungees along the bottom of the plate.
lift bag Some plates will accept a storage pack for lift bags, where the bag rides behind your back. I carry a lift bag, in a sleeve, attached to the lower left of the plate.
signal mirror/whistle/etc. These are the kinds of small items that really do better in a pocket. And, westuit pockets are really nice to have (see below).
2nd reg (octo/pony) If you don't want to use a long hose/bungied backup system, you can clip your pony or octo reg off to one of your chest d-rings. If you go BP/W, go ahead and make the transition to a long hose primary and bungeed necklace octo.
I strongly recommend having pockets attached to your wetsuit (several threads on this topic currently open on the Board. While most drysuits have pockets, most wetsuits don't. But, I haven't found a comparably functional altrernative to having pockets put on my wetusit. Costs a few dollars but well worth it, and may help avoid having too many items dangling from D-rings.

I appreciate the replies.

A few of you recommend pockets. Other than gluing them to the wetsuit, are there other options that work?

Do you glue them to the front or side of the thighs (or somewhere else?)?

Thank you!

Dive rite makes a removable thigh pocket that attatches to your harness and upper thigh. You can also find pockets that slide on 2 inch webbing.

don't forget about X-shorts

For my wetsuit, I use X-shorts. They have extremely nice, big pockets on them.
