One of the concepts is to use a backup that is at least equal in quality to the primary, since you will be the one using it if things go south. Many octos as marketed are cheaper second stages that do not offer the same performance as the primary.
A variation of this is that some technical divers will use a balanced primary but an unbalanced secondary in the belief that two different regs will not share the same failure modes. I won't comment on that flawed argument (ooops, I just did) other than to suggest that care needs to be taken to ensure the unbalanced backup has enough performance to do the job.
