I will be staying near Puerto Morelos mid July and found 2 dive ops there, Dive In Puerto Morelos and Wet Set. Anybody have experience with these folks? Thanks for any input.

I will be going to Puerto Morelos next Sunday and after much research will be diving with Wet Set. I have been communicating with the owner Paul and have a good feeling about them.

Some clown must have sent that post from my computer that I think Wet Set was great. Disregard that posting as it did not come from me.

Do you know what the diving is like in Puerto Morales around October? I can't find any info on that...or who else to ask.
Thanks !

I'm not sure how your post was tagged onto a tread from July, 2009, but I do have an answer to your question. In October you run the risk of having the ports closed due to weather. You could lose a whole week worth of reef diving. You need to go with the understanding that you may need to quick-switch to the cenotes to get ANY dives in. If you plan cenote dives in advance then switching days to work around the weather can be to your advantage. Get in touch with the Dive OP you choose and have this set beforehand. Enjoy your holiday - you are sure to get some rain but the cenotes don't close due to weather.

We were in Puerto Morales last October and used Aquanauts Dive Adventures who I would highly recommend.

It is hurricane season so you are taking a chance of having bad weather. We had a couple of days of rough seas and rain as hurricane Ida approached. Fortunately we left the day before it hit the Yucatan.

We like to take a fall trip and have done Mexico in Sept-Nov several years in a row including last year and have usually had good weather. Last year was the worst weather we've had but maybe we were just lucky the previous trips. If your time is flexible the later you go the less likely you'll have a hurricane.

If you are going to go to the Riviera Maya at that time of year anyway then just take your chances but if you are going specifically to dive it could be risky. If you do go make sure you go to the wreck and of course do at least one cenote dive. The best deal is to go to the operator at the Dos Ojos cenote (I can't remember the name of the shop). They are just north of Hidden Worlds. I think it was only $40 a couple of years ago and there are very friendly and professional.

We are changing it up this year and going to Roatan instead for the last week of September. It is outside of the normal hurricane area so should have a better chance of good weather. We like to go a bit later in the year to avoid some cooler weather but the rainy season starts in October in Roatan so the end of September will have to do. The Dolphin and Shark dives on Roatan look like must do dives.

We've also booked a week in Utila next March for one of the Whale Shark Research weeks which should be great.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Doug

One last thing about cenote diving is that while it's great that you can still dive even in bad weather it is when the sun is shining that you'll have the best experience. Seeing the sunbeams is something you shouldn't miss. It reminded me a bit of the northern lights.

After posting a negative review re: Wet Set in Puerto Morelos - I was advised that last year Wet Set went under new ownership. I checked Wet Set's website an hour ago and Paul is still listed as the owner. Another reason to stay away from Wet Set.
