We are wanting to head to Puerto Morelos soon, and are trying to find out as much as we can about it. I am especially interested in recommendations on hotels close in to town. We would prefer to not stay at a large resort, but something small and on the water would be great. Any thoughts would be very much appreciated.

Also, any other information would be a big help. From searching the boards, it looks like Dive Puerto Morelos is a good place to start for our diving.

Thanks

Yes, Dive Puerto Morelos is a good place to use for the diving. My wife and I used them in August 2004 and had a very pleasant experience.

As for where to stay, I'd recommend contacting Cat who owns/runs Dive Puerto Morelos. Ask her for advice and options for lodging.

Good luck.

Michael

Yes email Catriona Brown (catbrown@prodigy.net.mx) at Dive Puerto Morelos for suggestions, and also check out the official Puerto Morelos web site.

I just came back from Puerto Morelos on Jan 5th. I love it there.

Here are a few choices:
Ojo de Agua -On the beach w/ a pool. Check out web site. www.ojo-de-agua.com
Villas Latinas - On beach w/ a pool. Next door to Ojo de Agua. You can e-mail: villaslatinas20@prodigy.com

Casa Mermaid - Not on beach. E-mail: jeanwin@prodigy.net
Casita del Mar - on the beach w/ a pool. www.hotelcasitadelmar.com

I know that there are a few more, but I don't have any personal experience w/ them.

I stayed at a small bed & breakfast this time. It was very...rustic. I arrived w/ no hotel at all. I was not thrilled w/ the accomodations, but felt lucky to get a room. Everywhere I tried was booked solid. Owner & staff were wonderful, however. Breakfast was plentiful & delicious.

THANKS, that is the info I am needing. Those look like the type of laid back places I am looking for. Thanks again for the info. THis is a last minute trip I am trying to throw together, so I hope that I can find a room.

Do you dive mostly out of Puerto Morelos or head over to Cozumel?

Thanks

This past trip (October) we dove mostly right out of Puerto Morelos. There are lots of great dive sites only a short boat ride away. A trip to Cozumel IMHO is a must, however. As good as the diving is on the Riviera Maya the massive corals and walls over in Cozumel are well worth seeing. Dive Puerto Morelos hooked me up with Deep Blue over there. I took the morning ferry over from Playa Del Carmen and I got two tanks in with them. I was back by around 3PM that afternoon. San Miguel is a fun town to walk through as well, so you could easily spend the whole day there.

Puerto Morelos is VERY laid back, and the shop owners are extremely friendly. In Playa Del Carmen there are lots of vendors accosting you in the streets trying to get you into their store, and I saw none of that in Puerto Morelos. It is a fun little town.

Other places on the beach are Santa Fe bed and breakfast, Villas Playasol, Casita Blanca and Hacienda Morelos. Both Playasol and Casita Blanca have full kitchens as well. I am just setting up with a friend a new site where all sorts of up to date info about accom and restaurants and water sports will be available soon...visitpuertomorelos.com, let me know if there is anything else you need...

Backinthewater,

When I am in Puerto Morelos, I just dive on the mainland. I don't head over to Coz. But if you have never dove Coz, then I would say it is a must-do for your trip. I try & avoid the ferry as I tend to get seasick. On the mainland, the cenotes are amazing. I enjoy the ocean diving along the Mayan Riviera as well. I don't compare it with Coz, because if you do that, you'll always come up short. I enjoy it for what it is.
As for Puerto Morelos, I love that nice little town. Very laidback. I was in Playa del Carmen 3 days in a row to transfer buses. I couldn't stand it. Way to busy, congested & noisy. I don't care for Cancun proper either. To Americanized, with hotel on top of hotel. And an endless variety of chain restaurants. But, obviously, some people love that type of thing. Or it wouldn't be so crowded.

Cat Brown,
I look forward to your website. I am always looking for that small, out of the way, diamond in the rough.

Thanks everybody for the help. Catbrown, I have sent you a PM. THanks
