Hello fellow divers,

My name is Frederick, but I go by Rick. I'm in my early 50s and live in Oregon. I'm 6'0" tall and weigh about 190 lbs or 183 cm and 86 kg. Married 23 years, no children except 4-legged--two dogs, a Rottie and a Lab.

My work is as a grant manager for a state agency and I have a second part-time job as a Registered Nurse on an IV team; that's how I'm paying for my gear and dive trips.

I certified in 1973 with SSI. At that time we lived in texas so I did a lot of diving in Cozumel because it was way cheap. I didn't log dives then as it wasn't really part of my training. I figure from certification till getting back into diving seriously 14 months ago, I probably made about 75 dives (Cozumel, Caymans, Hawaii, Tahiti, and I would have dived Australia but the weather wouldn't cooperate)

Didn't really concentrate on scuba for years because I got into another kind of diving, skydiving. I did that for 10 years and about 900 dives. I also am a commercial pilot, but don't fly anymore because it's too darn expensive.

Back into diving on moving to Oregon in 1999. Found out about the great cold water diving and a whole new world opened up to me. I love it up here although the transition to cold was a challenge.

Gear: DUI 200 drysuit, SP Mk25/S600, DUI weight and trim system, just bought a Dive Rite Transpac Harness but am marrying it to an OMS single, bungied bladder w/an SS1 secondary air source inflator (I like the right shoulder dump--used to dive a SP Knighthawk), single PS E7 100s, use 26 # weight, SP mask, Atomic Liquid Blue fins, UK light cannon, OM Server and Parkway Fogcutter knives.

Recent Experience and certs: 80 dives since reentry. PADI AOW, IANTD Basic Nitrox. Plans for wreck cert, rescue and dive master. don't plan to go to instructor because i've done enough instructing in my life. I like teaching, but it's work and diving is my recreation.

Plans--probably go technical and get full training. interested in wrecks and deep diving. don't think I could do caves, but am willing to check it out after training.

Last but not least, philosophy and world view.

I am a Christian, but don't believe he was God's only son or representative--have studied Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism and Judaism. My philosophy is based on golden rule and consideration. I believe in inclusion, sharing and being honest.
I am an ardent environmentalist and believe we must protect what we have left. I was born a U.S. citizen, but must say of late I am not particularly proud of my country. I think we should go metric, share more, stop pushing our beliefs on other cultures and countries, all learn a second language at least, do the most we can to preserve the environment, stop wasting and driving huge SUVs, stop ravaging other countries resources for our own greed and excesses, and offer to help improve basic conditions in other countries IF they want us to and ask.

This latter paragraph is only by way of introduction, I won't discuss religion or politics again on this site. BTW, I usually sign my name RW, but went with FAW I think because RW was already taken.

Welcome to the Scuba Board. :hi: Fun place to hang out, compare, argue, etc. :thumb:

I'll be looking forward to your participations. Haven't done much in the Pacific, nothing north of Catalina Is Calf yet, but hope to next summer. Guess I'll need a dry suit?

 don

Wowsers Rick, welcome aboard! You seem to be as curious about the world as I am when it comes to having participated in many different activities through out your life! :D

Welcome from your neighbor one state to the north.

Interesting bio, Rick. Maybe we'll meet up in some warm water locale. . . . Mexico, Caymans, or Hawaii. Or why not try the Philippines? Incredible diving there!

As for the Pacific Coast, I've done lots of tidepooling, but haven't had the desire for any coldwater scuba yet. I get cold enough in warm water sometimes!

It looks like you'll be an excellent resource on the board. Hope it's fun for you, as well.

thanks for the welcome. i look forward to chatting with you. as for warm water, i'm going to try and save enough for Deb and I to join a trip to Cozumel in May. We went there often after we married because we lived in texas and it was so inexpensive. Did a lot of diving there. if you're interested in maybe hooking up with the group let me know.

you know, one issue i didn't talk about is cost. dagnabit this sport is pricey. i'm about 4/5 of the way through buying gear and training so i can see the light. but it gives me pause for thought now and then. glad the gear lasts a long time, know what i mean?

still to buy; 30cf pony and reg, back up computer, better undergarment, camera rig. so i'm still looking at around $1500 more in gear. THEN i can start planning trips i hope.
