Problems with white balance

How close do I have to be to the white object that i'm using to adjust the WB?

There are some that say you should WB at the same distance as the subject of the picture. That makes a lot of sense to me, but I just shoot raw w/auto WB and sort it out with PSE4.

I am not having the problem with the Strobe., If I use the strobe, it is only a matter of taking a shot, look at it, and adjust the intensity untils it's right. Colors are.. of course perfect, due to the flash.. The issue I was having is with natural light.
