update:

i stumbled over a scientific study of the sherwood maximus vs blizzard. the blizzard for me is overkill. but having read this study about sherwood maximus makes me lean towards buying it. the catch is that i will have to know with my lds about their terms and conditions of buying diving stuff from them as well as repairs, parts and yearly overhauling.

the downside to this research though was it was conducted more than 10 years ago; thereby, the possibilities of the data being obsolete is high. i am trying to find nedu research for other brands such as apeks, scubapro, poseidon, etc... but found nothing over the net.

here in the philippines the easiest to service would be aqualungs and scubapros. apeks, being owned by aqualung, falls into this category too.

i myself dive with an aqualung legend lx which is quite compact, easy to srvice and has an acd as the bonus feature. this keeps the water out of the first stage.
if you are looking for totally brand new stuff then be forewarned that regulators are quite expensive in the philippines. your options would be to buy online in the states and have a relative bring it over to the philippines or maybe get slightly used gear if you dont mind doing so. i think the best place to get good value slightly used gear is with kiko from MAK diver. he sells a lot of scubapros and a few aqualungs and mares (which i wouldnt really recommend).

well just my 2psi.
good luck on your search

update:

i had a lengthy conversation with the lds over the phone (used a different name) regarding their sherwood reg them. they told me that they are the authorised distributor of sherwood regs and are certified to repair. then pulled more questions from my sleeve mostly based on the ones most of you posted. they were able to answer the questions well. later that afternoon, i went there and asked a different person the same question just to check if all them really know what they are selling and stuff and their answers were all consistent. ... so i ended up pulling some bread from my stash and got the regs... the cool part is, they assembled the reg on the spot so that i would know how to assemble and disassemble it... then they made me do it the second time around... then actually allowed me to attach my bc's lp hose... taught me how to maintain and stuff and to go back every december of the year for cleaning or anytime if something happens to the reg.

the experience was pretty nice... i was well accommodated and thoroughly informed about the tech side of the reg (cookie point for customer service). the maximus is pretty simple and does not have the rings and the bells... my conjecture would be that i'll easily troubleshoot it if anything happens but definitely won't go too far dissecting them! i'll be testing my new regs this week on pool then on a diving trip after a couple of weeks to assist my instructor's ow students. yey!!!

thanks a lot guys!
