You know this because of the multitude of other cave instructors you've had experience with?
This is a horrible example. You were an accomplished diver already with solid tek diving skills.Any decent instructor will be able to tell if you are ready for the next level.
No one is going to be the perfect student during class (with the possible exception of ME of course) and there is no reason to expect if from yourself. It is a training class after all. Bouyancy and Trim are about the only things that you really need to have dialed in beforie class. The other skills and drills will all rely on that and it will alll come together just fine in the end.
Some will tell you to go slow and not be in a hurry. There is good sense in this because it gives you time to build the experience to deal with the more challenging dives that are ahead of you. I did not take that route however, I went from zero to hero during a 1 week course on a rebreather. No OC cave training at all. Was that the smartest thing? Depends on what you do after training! The c-card does not mean that you are perfect and know it all, it just means that you have the minimum knowledge and skills to proceed into the caves and continue learning.
