Me and my girlfriend have booked Open water, Advanced open water and Enriched air courses.

We have just finished all our Knowledge reviews and exam for the Open water course and have set our first pool dive on friday......

However... my G/F has missed period and we have found out she is pregnant. :D

I know that there is a big no when diving pregnant but is it still ok as we are only diving in an indoor pool which is no deeper than 4 metres?

Any advice would begreatly appreciated

Robert

diving while pregnant is a big unknown. nobody really knows the risks.

thus, everybody errs on the side of caution.

since the risks are unknown, it's best not to take them. also, be aware that
the greatest pressure change happens in the top 15 feet of water.

personally, if i were pregnant (an impossibility) i would avoid diving under any
pressure. if my wife were pregnant, i would strongly urge no diving.

Just don't do it...

yeah, if the dive shop has even a remote concept of customer service. They should allow you to reschedule the courses.

the courses are exciting, but its not worth it (I doubt your instructor would let her in the water anyway).

Oh and CONGRATUALTIONS!!

Thanks :)

Shes a bit upset as we havent really started but i suppose its best to stop now than to stop near the end :(

Congratulations!

The simple answer is no diving, at all, ever, not even a pool whilst pregnant.

AFAIK no-one has ever done a study into human pregnancy and diving - do you really want your child to be an experimental subject?

I'll bet all the money in my pocket that you will not find a hyperbaric doctor, anywhere in the world, who will say categorically that it will not harm an unborn child if the mother goes diving, even in a shallow pool.

Anyway, your g/f, even if she decides to complete her pool training, will not be able to complete the o/w skills and will ultimately have to start again from the beginning. So there's not much point in putting her and your baby through it.

You, on the other hand, should complete the course asap and get as much diving in as possibly over the next nine months - 'cos you're not going to get wet often once baby arrives!:D

Well, she should feel free to get a free account here for herself and live vicariously through our exploits... :)

I would check with DAN and doctor who knows about diving and diving related illnesses. To be on the safe I would not do anything until one of the 2 says it is ok to do so, probably a year from the date of conception to after the baby is born and she is back to "normal" for lack of a better term.(medically speaking.)There is a period of a couple of months adjustment after the baby is born in that a woman cannot do certain things until everthing is ok'd by a doctor.Like swiming, baths etc.( I am an EMT in Fl. and dont want to get into specifics.)
btw cingratulations.
