Depends on how much you know about the particular type of gear (category/brand/model) and how to evaluate it's condition for safety and functionality. Fins, masks, etc. not much of an issue. Regs and BCs/wings are more critical that you know what you are doing.

With a shop, you can look before you buy and have someone to go back to if there is an issue. With online marketplaces, it is on you to evaluate it and you may be stuck with whatever you got, with no recourse from the seller if it is not what it seemed/you thought.

I purchased a used Mares Smart Apnea dive computer on eBay and have yet to try it out. The risk seemed low and so I thought it was a good deal. I have sold some tanks, regs and BCDs before at my local dive shop.
