Does anyone have a clue what just happened. There was a power outage North America wide for 40 seconds. Just curious if anyone has heard anything.

Not exactly sure what happened, but some part of the northeast interconnect went down and caused some sort of cascading effect. The Con Edison transformer on 14th street in Manhattan is billowing smoke, but the mayor says that's part of a shutdown procedure and it's not a fire.

So a large portion of the northeast (everything in Manhattan - wall street, the UN, etc), Ottowa, Detroit, Cleveland, Newark, all without power.

The power at my house went to about 50 volts for about half an hour before it came back on.

Lots of people stuck in elevators.. subways have stopped, so people are trapped in the 90+ heat in the packed subways because they're stopped in the tunnells.

People are packing the brooklyn bridge trying to walk home.

They say it's not terrorism.. cause I know you were wondering :)

Fun stuff :)

You really shouldn't exaggerate stories like these. There was no power outage across North America. I'm in Chicago, which is in North America and everything is fine. I think it involved some cities in the East and North East and some of Canada...but not North America wide.

Pre- 9/11 this is a failure of the interconnecting links that join the East's power grid.

Post- 9/11 this is a funded attack by Osama to disrupt our society in anticipation of a much bigger attack.

:SIGH:

power is still off in a lot of places, it's on CNN

Looks like the power grid for the entire northeast overloaded!

I've had CNN on since before this happened. No one on there has mentioned terrorism at all, except to say that there's no evidence of it. Certainly no one has mentioned Osama.

A couple of my friends in California said that there was a short power interruption there which corresponded to my power outage in Albany, NY. At the very least, people from Boston to Detroit to Ottowa are affected. That's a large portion of North America. And if the California disruption was related, it was most certainly "North America-wide." That doesn't mean everyone in North America obviously, but I think many major cities were. At this point people from Boston to Detroit are *still* without power.

Must be hard being right all the time!!!

Cities affected include New York; Boston, Massachusetts; Cleveland, Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; Toronto and Ottawa, Canada. The power outage occurred shortly after 4 p.m.

State officials said the Niagara-Mohawk power grid was overloaded. The grid provides power for New York and stretches into Canada. The officials said the outage is a natural occurrence and not related to terrorism.

Much of Midtown Manhattan and Wall Street was shut down. All area airports and the Long Island Railroad were also affected.

The Federal Aviation Administration grounded planes at all three New York area airports because the blackout affected security screening facilities. The FAA reported planes also were grounded at the Toronto airport. The airports were operating on backup power, officials said.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg confirmed the outage was not related to terrorism or an accident.

"The good news is, Con Ed's facilities have shut down automatically, which they're programmed to do," he said. "No damage was done to the Con-Ed facility."

Bloomberg said it was unknown how long the outage may last.

Thousands of people could be seen leaving buildings and walking into the streets. New York subways were reported stopped and people were trapped in the cars.

"We are going to have a situation where people are going to have to walk a long distance. They need to be careful," Bloomberg said. "Our advice is to go home, open up your windows, drink a lot of liquids."

Ummm, somebody needs to calm down a little.

1)She said North America wide, I think that was exaggerated.

2)I didn't insult her

3)If you think I am attacking another board member and have a problem with it, then why are you personally attacking me in your post?

4)Moderators are here for this very purpose, please take my post up with one of them.

5)If you feel you need to attack me again, please PM me, instead of doing out in the public forum. No need to clutter the public place with this kind of stuff. It doesn't set a good standard for our newer members.

Thanks,

Jason

No big surprise. I work in Bloomfield, CT, which is just north of Hartford.

We had a power drop. Our UPS kicked in for a bit, then the power came back up.

We still have power in most of Western Massachusetts.

This is done. I don't want to argue with you about this.

It's 35 degrees Celcius/40% relative humidity.....and the air conditioner in my house just calved.......

................but I don't suspect that there is anything sinister in play.......
