I'm looking for a portable pocket that I can put my smb, signal mirror, and a whistle in. Nothing too big... about 6"-7" long, 4"-5" wide. I'd like the option to strap it to my leg or bcd. I've looked but really haven't found the right thing yet.
Would be easy to make. I'll look into this. I've got some material (ballistic nylon) left over from something else I was doing - I think I can make myself a pocket or two.

I had the Oxycheq version of the thigh-strapping pocket. I used it for a while with the thigh strap, found that to be too much of a pain to deal with, cut it off, used the pocket just attached to my harness belt.
It worked, but how much stuff do you really need to lug? If I ever have a bunch of extra stuff to lug along on a dive, I'll rehook it up again. Till then, it's in the dive locker. The velcro thigh strap however is permanently lost to history.

Dive Rite Clipper pocket. $25 about 4.5x4.5x2" can be slipped on any 2" webbing in 4 directions. i keep a back up light and strobe in it. it could hold a small smb and various other items, not a 6' one though. i used a Dive Rite Quick Draw sleeve (similar to the Zeagle Quick deploy sleeve), which makes for easy storage/access of smb, mirror, whistle. scubatoys will sell them to you separately, they only appear on their website together with an smb

Zeagle makes a nice pocket for $18.00. It has draining fabric, an connection grommet and the choice of 1 inch or 2 inch webbing for attachment. I had the same issue. I wanted to take some stuff with me, like chem-lites, strobe, extra sausage, rescue sreamer etc.

That's exactly what I ended up buying and it was perfect! It's a Zeagle Sport Utility Pocket.

I modified an existing pouch for my DAN SMB. It might work with what you want to carry in it. It doesn't have any internal pockets for the small stuff like a mirror or whistle, but you might be able to tie those to your SMB.

The pouch is from Deep Outdoors which I got from Scuba.com for $5.95. Deep Outdoors LDS-Single Accessory Cuff 03040 with reviews at scuba.com

I had two knife grommet attachment points already on my BCD (Aeris Atmos LX) and drilled holes through the stiff backing of the pouch to match the grommets.

I then ran a 1/2 inch wide zip tie through the holes and grommets and cinched it tight.

I added some fastex buckles to make it easier to open and close.

I've since switched to a BP/W setup, but I still use this accessory cuff as it slides on the waist strap perfectly.

That's really clever. Looks nice and neat but accessible when you need it to be. Thanks for the idea.

Ok so now that I am back where the alterations prices are cheap again, I want to pick some people's brains.

If I want to built X shorts knockoffs, or attach a pocket to a wetsuit or whatever, is gluing and sewing better that just sewing, or just gluing? Never done it so I don't have a clue which way to go.

Also if you do the homemade Xshorts idea, is it best to go with Neoprene pockets? Cloth pockets?

I glued a Halcyon pocket to my wet suit. so far it is terrific. I tried the DiveRite strap-on, and as another poster noted, it migrates to the front of the thigh. Worse than that--I think--is that it complicates ditching your rig. I dive BP/W, and normally to ditch the rig I undo the waist buckle and I'm free. With the strap-on pocket, I have to also either undo the thigh straps or unthread the pocket from the waist strap.

I have since cut it down and use it as a pure pocket. It goes on my waist belt and i I ever have to ditch the rig, it stays with the rig.
