were these popping up in a new window or just a "banner" at the bottom of each thread? (Just curious...)

They were 'expanding' from the bottom of the window. Looked like a pop-up.
The banner was there as well if you scrolled all the way to the bottom, but even if you were nowhere near the bottom and you were susceptible, you would see the roughly 2 inch by 5 inch flash ad at the bottom of the browser window without scrolling to the bottom.
