I know it is a bit in the future, but I have been invited to Point aux Barque next summer and was told that there was a large underwater park there. I can't seem to find anything about it on the internet, however, and the person who invited me is a non-diver. Anybody know what she is referring to? Is there any good diving there, and who would be an operator to contact? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You need to look under Thumb area Preserve. There is a large perserve there only accessable but charter boat.
http://www.rectecdivecharters.com/Thumb Preserve.htm has a nice listing of the shipwrecks in the area also a list of the other perserves in the state.

The diving there is great but a little iffy. Being at the top of the thumb there is a good chance of wind and waves and not getting out. Dives are generally 100-150 in depth depending on the wreck, a few shallower but not many

For an operator, try Chuck's Marine 989 738-2628 He does run charters and if he isn't going out at that time, he should be able to direct you to some one who is.

GLDiver:

Thanks, the link helps a lot, I couldn't locate much about it.

It does look interesting and would give me a chance to use that drysuit of mine a bit more.

A drysuit is pretty much a necessity,
temp at depth even in august and september this year was 41 degrees
but the wrecks are cool, and not dived too often.

Joe,

The Thumb area diving can be quite wonderful. As mentioned, most are more advanced diving. Many are with recreational limits. & are worth multiple dives each.

The link provided by GLdiver is part of Rec & Tec Dive Charters website. Search the site and you'll get to the contact information. It's a wonderful charter operation although it usually runs out of Port Sanilac, MI.

Two other operators I chartered out of the Thumb and would definitely recommend are:

Pintail Charters with Marty Lutz http://www.pintailcharters.com/

Andy Donato also runs a great charter but doesn't have a website that I know of. PM me for phone / email address.
