I had a chance to dive with Miss Conduct and Capt. Conrad last Friday. Conditions were nothing short of fantastic. Hit the main 85 foot reef and the water was a toasty 82 degrees and viz was easily 60 - 70 feet. First thing we see as we drop down are bugs all over the place! And not small ones either, but big 5lb monsters and they are walking around like they friggin own the place. I had to pick one up just to see if it had huge cajones hanging down.
With bugs this big and out all over the place, I'd pick Pompano to easily limit on mini-season. Our home ground is normally Jupiter, and we have not seen a single hog up there since last year. But Pompano had several spots where they were stacked up. Not huge but one at 17" and couple more at 14".
2nd dive was off a broken up wreck called the Sailboat which had nothing on it to shoot. We moved NW over to the 75 foot reef line I found a hole full of mango's. I freeshafted a couple of nice sized ones, then got my spear stuck in a rock and had to dig it out. Not a single shark encounter at all, this sure wasn't Jupiter and it's a heck of a lot warmer than the 64 degree waters.
Big Thank you to the 6 pack Miss Conduct and Capt Conrad. No restrictions whatsoever, we could dive anywhere we wanted and as long as we wanted. No hassles, no cattle boat and he put us on fish, 100% pro-spearo friendly. He gave us the option to go deeper where he knew some groupers where hanging out but we didn't have the mix for it. If you can get on this boat, he's great!
Since we were headed to Key Largo that afternoon, we took all the fish to SunDowner's at MM107, who cooked them up 3 ways, grilled, blackened, and Onion Crusted. Cold beers, freshest fish and $11.99/pp dinner with sides, on the gulf with the sunsetting, can't get much better.
