I'm looking for tips on diving Point Lobos...I'm from the east coast, and haven't dove there before. I'm scheduled to dive with a buddy on the 5th, and was wondering about conditions, best entry point, and must see areas.

Thanks,
Chuck

There's actually only one entry point... Make sure you have reservations since your coming from a long ways aways.... read about kelp diving. Don't panic if you get snagged, just bend and break the stalks... leave enough air to swim underneath. Have fun

Pat Lovejoy has done a nice job on

You must enter down the boat ramp.

Climb up the trail at the back of the parking lot and get
a good overview of Whaler's Cove. Note the channel
out through the kelp. NOTE IT WELL. It is your friend.

Don't bother diving right in front of the ramp. It's boring
sand. Hang a left and swim out the channel. The depth
is about 20' where the channel begins, about 75' at the
mouth of the cove, with a gradual slope between. Drop
at whatever depth you are comfortable in, and work
your way back towards the launch ramp. Leave PLENTY
of air to swim under the kelp. I'd plan on being on top
with 700 PSI. Surface, find the channel, swim UW to
the channel, then surface swim back in.

The kelp in Whaler's is about the thickest kelp anywhere.
I've personally helped three people out of the middle of
it who were on the surface, OOA, and had gotten all
wrapped up in it struggling.

Thanks for the tips. We do have reservations for the 5th, and I am very excited to check it out. Hopefully the conditions are good on Monday.

Bring a BIG dive light! Very DARK; DARK. Bloom + overcast + kelp canopy + topo shadows = VERY DARK. Bring your dive light.

Last Tuesday on Cannery Wall the bloom went to the bottom @ 60ft. Vis 10ft maybe. GREEN DARK.

Seals were still friendly though. Sea otters common. And check-out the BarnSwallow nest under the outside rafter gable of the restroom. The young won't have fledged before you dive there. (ps - that light brown log thing out in the inner cove with the vultures standing on it, is a whale carcass.)

Enjoy the diving. Think divelight, divelight, divelight.
