I guess that I am lucky (or not). I have several contraindications for diving, but my doctors have agreed to let me dive. I have had asthma for a long time, but not excercise enduced. I have not had an "attack" for many years. Next, I had a spontaneous pneumothorax about 20+ years ago. Finally, had open heart surgery to replace the ascending aeorta and a "bad" valve. Even with all of this, I have been released to dive. So do not give up hope, but be sure to get medical evaluation befor proceeding. I have NEVER had any issues while diving. Best wishes.

PS - I have a three week dive trip to Thailand set for May and a week long liveaboard to the Dry Tortugas for June with four dives on wrecks out of Key West prior to that trip.
