Just spoke with dive shop. They are filling tanks now, and they were able to get the plus rating. Thanks to everyone once again for your insight and expertise. Could not have accomplished this without your input.

I have dealt with the same aggrevation in the past. My take is LDS's do not want you to have the + rating as they beleive they are being placed in harms way by "over filling" a cylinder older than 5 years. Any opinions on this matter?

Yup1 They're morons...

Tell them to get educated or you will go else where. (i.e. at least give them a chance before telling them to sod off).

I hear you. I am actually worn out dealing with LP clyinders and going all HP as these same shops with fill HP's at 3900 psi. Go figure! At least I can properly plan a dive knowing how much freakin gas I will have...

Nothing surprises me with dive shops and hydro testing ignorance.

I recently had a never used, yet 9 year old OMS/Faber cylinder hydroed and told em to do the +. Got it back without it and was told since they did not do the original hydro they could not put a + on it. Morons for sure.

My LP 72 was built in 1977 and came with a '+' rating. That would be the only way it could hold anywhere near 72 CF.

In 1982, 1987, 1994 and 2000 it was re-hydro'd without the '+' rating.

I had it hydro'd in 2009 when I bought it and it came back with a '+' rating because the hydro shop had, or found, the REE number and wasn't too lazy to do the last bit of work. I applaud them!

I gave you a "thanks" for that post. I thought that if a cylinder was ever hydro'd without a "+" that it couldn't get it again. I have some old 72's that had a + originally but not for the past couple of hydros. I would like to have them tested for the plus again. If they don't pass, time tor the trash.

The down side is that all 3 were hydro'd this year, so unless I want to pay for it twice, I can't get it for a few more years.

If a tank passes the standard hydro but fails the EE test to qualify for the "+", it is still perfectly legal to use, and you'll probably get the same fill 93% of the time as you would if it had the "+" on it. So why on earth would you scrap it?

Also, if a 72 passes the standard hydro but not the "+", odds are probably 50/50 that the problem was with the tester not the tank. The really odd thing is, even if it fails for the plus this time, it may still pass it next time.
