Greetings!

I will be spending a week at the tip of the thumb of Michigan in late July. Since I really don't know the area, can someone recommend some dive shops, sites and charters? I will be driving to Ottawa afterwards, so I don't need to dive only in the thumb area.

I would really like to see some wrecks, particularly some wooden ships. Don't know if that's a realistic goal given that I'm not trained in deco. I have just over 200 dives, a dry suit with 400gm thinsulate, and a few sets of doubles I can take with me.

I don't mind solo diving, so if there is any good shore diving I just need a place to get my tanks filled.

If there's nothing in the thumb area, can you suggest another area close by?

Thanks,
Harry

Sounds great! Thanks!

What are the water temps in mid-to-late July?

What are the water temps in mid-to-late July?

I did four dives out of Port Sanilac with Rec and Tec last Aug 11-12. Water temps were low 70s above the 1st thermo, upper 50s between the 1st/2nd thermo and then 46-51 at depth (70-85').

If you are going north Alpena has numerous Wrecks (wooden & steel) all within the NDL limits.
Thunder Bay Scuba has air / nitrox fills.

I'm headed to Port Austin the second week of June. Not sure who I'm diving with but I'll give a report when I get back.

Gary Venet does indeed run a great charter operation and Port Sanilac is one of my favorite destinations. Here is a link to some of my dive photos. The Mary Alice B. and Great Storm of 1913 slide shows feature some of the great Port Sanilac wrecks. The Dunderburg lies to the north off of Harbor Beach but is a deeper dive. And of course Thunder Bay is further to the north but well worth the drive.
