Photos & Details - Ft. Lauderdale Aerojacks, both north and south

Just did some writeups on two well known sites, at least I think they're well known that go way back off the Greater Ft. Lauderdale, FL area. They include satellite images, charts, landmarks on how to find them, some photos, video and related details. There are a lot of sites like these that could be written up. Depending on interest more may follow. Have fun out there.

They were originally called the Dania Erojacks because the purpose of the jacks was to prevent beach erosion

lol @ Dennis. I wish a mod would do a find and replace throughout all of ScubaBoard to change all of the aerojacks and eurojacks references to the correct spelling.

Thanks and for the spelling correction too! The intent was to prevent erosion, sadly the Erojack groins weren't that successful in that regard. We did a transport study in the 1970's using dyed sand that indicated the sediment flowed past the groin without much delay. They did create some first rate artificial reefs though, likely good breakwaters in some areas too. I am impressed with how well the reinforced concrete has held up compared to coastal buildings! Does anyone have photos of the erojack circles off Sunrise Blvd around the third reef?

I hear there are also some near Port Everglades, at the north end of John Lloyd Park. Has anybody ever dived them?

Rick and Jenny, no to both but I hope to dive them this summer. I've dived the Dania erojacks quite a few times and the Yankee Clipper erojacks probably twice.

Rick, I look forward to diving these jacks and the Yankee Clipper. So good to hear we can dive off the beach up there. I had been told by numerous people for years you can't dive off Ft. Lauderdale beach in that area.

Jenny, you need to start doing your own research! I've been diving that beach for nearly 30 years. I've just never night dived it before...I think night diving used to be prohibited, but not day diving, I've made many dives there in full view of lifeguards. There was no sign saying no night diving and I can't imagine why they would prohibit it from just that stretch of beach. I'm positive we were legal.

EDIT: to clarify, we are talking about the erojacks off Fort Lauderdale's South Beach Park just north of the Yankee Clipper.

But just so I'm clear: you can or cannot night dive the Dania jacks?

You can night dive both sets of jacks, the Fort Lauderdale and the Dania Beach. The Dania ones are a really long schlep.
