It may depend on where you're doing most of your photography. I'm a LR fan, and still using 5.7; it does a great job in working with photos taken in the Puget Sound.

Since the OP is using a Sony camera, Capture One Express is a free download. If they opt for the full program, the Sony specific version of it can be downloaded at a very economical price (without looking it up, I think it is somewhere around $75USD).ON1 Photo Raw 2018 - cheaper than Capture one, no subscription (unlike light room), a lot of new features but a few bugs. I'm enjoying it, and as a novice, that says something - it's accessible, but clearly has a lot of room for growth.
