PFO ( patent foramen ovale) and the DAN PFO project

Hi all

As a new diver I am keen to get up to speed on all the risks.
( Knowing the dangers increases the adrenalin buzz ! ) I am worried myson may have PFO and as he is diving with me we are thinking of getting involved with the DAN PFO Project. Any body know anything about this ? will it be worthwhile? Do any divers from the Midlands of England want to make a joint trip to Elgin , Scotland to get on this trial ?

Thanks guys, I have been intouch with DAN Europe and the nearest investigator is some 500miles from me. This is a long way for a British driver, and as I have heard some criticism of the PFO test DAN are using I am wondering if it is worthwhile making the effort. I am just trying to get a balanced view here and would welcome any advice / comments.

The DAN project *REQUIRES* the diver is unaware of the non/existance of his/her PFO. It is not a free diagnosis service. In the UK you can get this diagnosis for free if refered by a GP. That is you have some condition to get through the NHS walls.

My partner suffers migrane and got a test and was refered by Dr Wilmshurst (the BSAC guru on the subject). Some of the doctors at the hospital were moaning about "a waste of money" etc. which proves what dickheads they are.. Surely a test to prevent a helicopter lift and expensive treatment is a good investment of NHS money. My advice is to read as much as possible then go to your GP and DEMAND the test because of some reason or another that pertains to your circumstances. Expect a fight, but expect to win..
