After having struggled through trial and error, several gear purchases to learn how to dive after my OW, it is seeing OW instructors doing the same old crap and turning out the same old crap for divers. It just kills me to be at a dive site and listen them talking and discussing skills and come up on the group in the water and see the complete clueless look on there faces.

Sure this is going to start and sh@t show, but it my pet peeve.

How else are they going to sell you the PPB class, a class that basically has no additional performance requirements than is in open water?

My pet peeves:

Differing prices on air fills. My shop(only 1of3 in my area) changes the damn price on air fills like crazy. Sometimes it’s 5 a fill. Others it’s 10 a fill, others it’s 7.50 a fill. Other times I pay nothing. I want a flat posted price that I will pay every time. I bought tanks to get cheaper dives in, but when an air fill is the same price as renting a tank, wtf??

Divers that take for ever to get in the water, I don’t care about skill level and will dive with anyone to lowest skill level with a competent certified diver. But it irks me when 5 of us are ready and just waiting on the one straggler.

DM’s who only vacation do vacation dives and have zero knowledge of the local sites(except the platform training area).

Divers who leave the group when we planned to dive as a group

Divers who turn the tanks on to blow a drop of water out of first stage cap.

Divers who wear full face masks all the time. Ffm have a purpose and a rec dive isn’t the place.

Only requirements for PPB is not touching bottom or surfacing. In my class we swam through a single hoop! PADI frustrates me

So what you are saying is that the individual instructor you had for the class did not follow the course standards. Is that correct?

Care to elaborate on the course standards. We also did a weight check with a DM.

My pet peeve: Dive shops who do not list their pricing or other basic information on their website.

Price is not the only thing that matters, but it matters, and can vary widely (example: there was an $800 difference between the highest and lowest class prices quoted for my Solo class). Also, I should be able to easily tell (without having to start the online booking process) the price of boat dives and whether they include tanks & weights, extra costs for nitrox, etc. I should also be able to tell what time the boat leaves, where from, and approximately when it returns -- especially if I'm on vacation with non-divers, I need to know the schedule when selecting a dive op.

One reason this should all be on their website, and a related peeve, is that many dive ops are really bad about responding to emails/facebook messages. I've had messages that were never responded to, or responded to months later (after I went elsewhere). Also many dive ops that do reply seem to have Tarzan send their emails, as they are often very terse and usually incomplete -- like saying when the boat leaves but not the location, or vice-versa (I'm really only asking basic when-where-how-how much questions).

And I especially dislike asking basic questions by email and just getting an email back that says to call the shop. For various reasons, many people can't always call a shop during their open hours. If possible I usually avoid doing business with shops that make it too hard for me to get the basic info - it's really not hard to list the basics online. /rant

Why does that tank sound to blow water out of cap bother some people so much? I only do it at home so one's around to be bothered.

Because it’s damned loud.

And they sometimes blow the end of the DIN fitting dry only to see the o-ring fly off... then spend 15 mins fittting another one, if they even carry a spare
