Recently i learnt to dive and absolutely love it! but i recently had an epileptic fit and convulsions, which as you can imagine is not good! but this does not render me epileptic because it is the first time it happened, they dont know why it happened, and (hopefully) it wont happen again! So im not sure whether i should go diving again or not! if anyone could advise me on the situation i would be very grateful, as i definitely want to go diving again!!! (especially now that im in aus!)

You need to been seen and tested by a doctor. If you do have epilepsy, they will most likely advise you not to dive. This is because if you have a seizure while underwater, you will most likely drown, even if your buddy is right there.

But I suspect you know that . . . .

I have a sister who is epileptic so I know about the condition. I would think you would want to be 100 percent sure by a doctor's consent about diving, today is not a good day to die.

How long ago was this seizure? (BTW, no one uses the word "fit" anymore. That went the way of lobotomies). Did you see a neurologist? Did you have an e.e.g and a complete neurological workup? Where I live, in NJ, you have to be seizure-free for two years before you can get your drivers' license. I would think that waiting two years to dive from the time of your last seizure would be prudent.

Yes, definitely see a neurologist. That is a doctor who specializes in disorders of the brain, spinal cords, nerves. DO NOT DIVE UNTIL YOU HAVE DONE THIS AND BEEN CLEARED!

It may be unfortunate that your diving days are over or at least delayed for a period of time. I would not want to be the one to bring your lifeless body to the surface and be unable to revive you.

I don't know...if I had a major seizure and convulsions, getting back in the water would not be a priory at this time. Finding a doctor that can accurately diagnose my condition and provide a reasonable prognosis going forward...now that would be on the top of my list.

Just a curiosity, is that any kind of seizure or is there an exception for trauma induced seizures?

You mean the two year rule? I really don't know. Sorry.

I know a diver who has had seizures as the result of a head injury years ago. Fortunately, his only known diving seizure was back on the dock. I'd already avoided diving with him (yep, he was worse than me), but now refuse to. He still goes on trips with another board that sponsors them, one reason I no long go with them. They know about his history and doctors orders to never swim, much less dive, but let him go anyway.

Your case may well be very different, of course.
