Hi i am going on vacation to the pensacola area and want to get some diving in. I was wondering what a good dive charter/shop is and what site to try to go to. Also what exposure protection and any special gear is needed?

Diving here anytime soon? 1/2mm will be more than fine and will keep the jellyfish off you. Toward the end of Sept, a 3mm might be in order.

all i am diving at the end of august and am used to so cal weather, (7mm wetsuit 3mm gloves/hood, 6.5 mm booties, so a 1/2 would work

Right now water temperature is hovering around 85F, so your suit may be too heavy for these conditions. The jellyfish are running right now so some sort of suit is recommended. Water is defintely warmer here than CA though!

As for dive charters, I will defer to others since I do not have experience in that area, but Pensacola has two big dive shops locally that organize charters

I would recommend Dave Mucci of Blue Water Adventures as well. I dove with him a year ago July, he is a nice guy and has a very nice boat. I wore my 3mm suit. We dove at two different sites, the surface temp was in the high 80's. The first dive was about 60 feet deep and the water was in the 70's at depth. I think anything less than a 3mm would have been a bit too thin. It is like jelly-fish fields from Spongebob this time of year. Since the two hurricanes have been through there, I would like to hear how the diving is now.

Maybe a little extra silt and a few of the sites may have moved a bit or dug themselves a bit deeper. Pretty much the same though.

Jellyfish came late this year, they're just now getting thick. I don't think they will be as bad as last year though...

I can't advise. I started diving in Pensacola in 1970 with Skipper's Dive shop (now defunct) and left in 1975. I'm sure the diving hasn't changed too much, however.
