I'm planning a Keys trip with my wife and daughter to the Florida Keys (first time) around Christmas. We plan to stop at Key Largo for a day or two, so I can dive Pennekamp. Can anyone reccomend a dive friendly hotel in Key Largo and/or Key West?

Thanks!

Hi...

we were in Key Largo over the weekend - stayed at the Travelodge mile marker 99 on the north side... friendly and inexpensive if that's the way you want to go. After all, more time is spent on the water than in the room:D

In Key Largo, the Ramada/Holiday Inn combination is a good value for families. They are located together in a marina at MM100 where you can pick from a number of dive operators in the marina. (we always use Paradise Charters). Ramada has refrigerators and balconies in every room, offers a free continental breakfast and tends to run a little cheaper than HI.

In Key West, the Holiday Inn Beachside is a good value as it has a sunning beach and is convienent to dive operators. It is not in downtown by Duval (and the big crowds)

Not sure what your travel plans are- I've always enjoyed visiting Everglades National Park. That time of year is the dry season, so the animals in the park start clustering around the available water and you can see great numbers of them. We've seen lots of critters (gators, turtles, birds, fish, snakes, etc) at a place in the park called Anhinga Trail, and the park is a quick ride from the upper Keys. It's a good way to spend the 24 hours before flying!

I've stayed with Kelly's on the Bay a couple times - always were well taken care of. If they're not diving where you want to go they'll hook you up. Make sure you ask for a larger room though - they have some itty bitty ones (used to be 2 hotels, now 1!) and they are like postage stamps.

For a more upscale stay, there are two good choices in Key Largo that I've stayed at and recommend.

The Westin Key Largo is a great full service hotel with all the amenities. Beautiful grounds and pool area. Dive arrangements can be made at the hotel.

Just down the road is the Ocean Pointe Suites Resort. These are condos that are rented out when not in use. All one and two bedroom suites, they offer more room if you have a number of people or a longer stay. They also put their rooms up on ebay fairly often - check it out to see if any dates coincide with your trip.
