I spoke with the shop owner where the reg was serviced, and as I expected, his immediate response was, "Bring it back -- we'll stand behind our work." That's what I'll do, I guess; I just hate letting go of the reg again.

This is really increasing my desire to switch our entire fleet to HOG regs and take the service class.

I'm glad you are going to get it checked. I've been looking at the Titan service manual and schematics, but I'm still puzzled about what the cause might be.... if you find out, please let us know so I can add it to my mental "toolbox".

What you are experiencing is one of the reasons I decided to start servicing our regulators (eight sets).

Best wishes.

Lynne,

If I understand correctly, this is happening while inhaling and inflating simultaneously. I've heard second stages stutter like this and while it could be related to incorrect Intermediate Pressure, my guess that it is an issue with the second stage. However, if you have a IP gauge, first make sure the IP is at 135 + or- 5 psi ( not near the low side of tolerance as it could exacerbate the problem) before going any further. OK, let's get back to the second stage. The stuttering is most likely caused by a little too much clearance between the lever and the diaphragm allowing the diaphragm to flutter.

If you want to attempt to fix this yourself, remove the hose from the second stage and with one of those cool pen lights MDs always have, peek inside the inlet. See that plug with a hole in it? That's the crown (orifice to us ScubaPro junkies.) O2 clean the end of a thin flat blade screwdriver, then while holding the purge button down to avoid engraving the seat, give the crown a 1/12th turn counter clockwise (imagine the hours on a clock and subtract an hour) Reconnect the hose finger tight and test. You can do this until either you've fixed it or it free flows. If you fix it, remember to torque the hose with a wrench; if it begins to free flow before you fix it, better to take it in and tell them Couv gave you bum advice.

If you got it to happen on both the drysuit inflator and on the primary 2nd stage with the long hose, at separate times, it almost certainly has to be a first stage issue. You might try to re-create the stuttering on your alternate and wing inflator. You might also take note as to whether it tends to happen more with low or high tank pressure.

If I've understood your description correctly, my guesses would be a slight mis-alignment in the springs that push the HP seat closed, some sort of friction with the balance chamber o-ring, or maybe just a little imperfection on the HP seat surface. Those are just guesses, though. At first it sounded like a dry suit inflator problem, but then you had it happen on a 2nd stage as well, at a different time. Is that right?

I thought HOG was a philosophy, not a brand. What's special about these? How come that in many years of deep (& cold) technical diving in several countries I've never come across anyone using them?

You need to get out more???

:D Just kidding!

They are a new brand. I dive a HOG wing, and it is terrific. The reason for all the "buzz" is that the pricing is really good for the high quality of the HOG gear, the customer support is very good (cerich from Edge/HOG is a frequent poster on these boards, answering questions/concerns.... try to get the CEO from Scubapro to post on here  ).

One of the things that has me the most pleased with HOG's business model is that they have enough confidence in their product and foresight to be willing to sell rebuild parts directly to their customers.

Best wishes.

Using the name "HOG" of course deceives people into thinking it has something to do with "Hogarthian" - naughty. Whatever. How easy are the regs to service and are service kits available?
