30 feet/9 m minimum starting visibility
This is the standard that is in the NSS-CDS Standards & Procedures and speaks directly to the minimum starting visiblity for Basic/Intro cave divers. This means that basic/intro cave divers are not to start a cave dive when the visibility is less than 30 feet.
This is a training guideline that people who elect to become trained as cave divers agree to adhere to. It is also the standard that the State of Florida has agreed to adopt when deciding whether or not to allow people to cave dive in the parks they own. They depend upon the NFSA line committee members to look at the conditions and report what we see.
Some of the cave had fairly good visibility, but the places where we know river water intrudes had visibility around 15 feet. The temperatures in these areas dropped to 68F.
We will wait a few days and go look again.
