in canada the card is called nexus
NEXUS - Service Canada
and it lets us enter the us and / or canada. we MUST have a passport in order to get a nexus card.
the card allows us to cross borders without talking to customs and immigration. at some surface crossings there are fast track lanes for nexus. in Niagara falls there is also a special Nexus only crossing.
in airports we use the machines. us GOES machines rely on the card and fingerprints. Canadian machines do an eyeball scan. it also gives us pre clearance in airports so we do no have to take off our shoes or belts or remove computers from bags when going through security.
so it is really a US / Canada border thing. a passport is required for all other countries.

p.s. our nexus card also allows us fast entry into the US from other countries via the GOES system. As long as the airport supports GOES. not all do.
