You should definitely do a lot of research before travelling to a country like PNG. I'm not saying it can't be done, but there are very real risks which are much more serious and scary than many other destinations in developing countries. If you poke into the pacific islands subforum under Australia/New Zealand/pacific islands, there's probably some trip reports there.

Personally, I'm not going to spend my money giving tourism income to countries like PNG, Myanmar, etc... But that's a decision every person has to make for themselves.

I'm looking to plan a trip to Papua New Guinea in 2027 (have to save up), just seeing if anyone has some insight on a trip like this?
Hi JakeDiver - I've dived in PNG and worked there several times and absolutely love it. Let's face it - it's probably a safer destination than the US at the moment. The diving in Milne Bay would be my preference and a liveaboard would get you to the best sites - with absolutely jaw dropping soft corals and marine life - last time in Milne I saw hammerheads, dugongs, whale sharks. a tiger shark and all manor of vast fish schools and small rare critters. Absolutely incredible. Tawali and Loloata Resorts both of great diving in their areas - including lots of world war 2 planes and other wrecks. This trip is running next year in July https://www.waterlustfiji.com/papua-new-guinea-trip-2026
