Double check, Asiana is also part of Star Alliance (so you can use UAL miles) and using upgrades, had really outstanding service - much nicer than UAL, and you might skip the whole island hopping thing.

The United Micronesia direct route for me from LAX is perfect & simple, with no transpacific leg more than seven hours (unless you want to do the planned 787 Dreamliner from Denver to Narita). Those coming from the east coast US, I recommend a day stopover in Honolulu:

Honolulu Airport Hotel
Pacific Marina Inn

You can try shopping for bargain flights to gateway hub Manila Philippines, but their Int'l Airport Terminal is the worst place to kill time on a stopover compared to Taipei, Seoul, Narita Tokyo or even Guam. There's currently a United Flight 192 from Manila to Koror Manila on Tues & Fri at 945pm.

You wanna pack really light? For Ladies, all you need is a bikini (jammer swim speedos for guys), and a Sarong (in Samoa call it a "Lava-Lava" for us macho guys!). . .

regarding packing... what you say "gear" do you mean regs only or everthing including fins? If the latter you may have some problems getting that on carry on.

I've been to the region twice (palau and Truk+Ponape, both from Cairns through Guam) and while they weren't as harsh with carry on as some airlines they did look at it for our flights. someone mentioned TSA being bullies on the first page, having been the only US port I've been to since pre 2000 I can't comment, but it did take a damn long time to get out and back in the airports, they were just slow, but reasonably polite.

when you say 'dive caddy' you mean something like this ScubaPro 10 lbs Caravan Roller Bag 53.350.120 with reviews at scuba.com i.e. a full sized bag?

if that's what you're intending to buy then I would recommend thinking along the lines of it being checked in and not allowed in the cabin.
