I am new to diving and I have received notices to pay for PADI membership. What are the benefits, if any, of doing so? Do I have to in order to keep my certification up to date?

The only benefit to this is for PADI. They get your money.
This is a way they promote stuff to you to take more classes.

You don't have to pay anything to keep your certificaion up to date.



*IF* you join, you get a subscription to Sport Diver magazine. but not much else.

For not much more per year, join DAN (Divers Alert Network) instead.

If you are looking for dive insurance, DAN is the way to go. Cheap considering the cost of a ride to the chamber. For now, dive safe, dive shallow(above 60'-100') and dive well within your limits!

Double check what they are asking you to pay. I am willing to bet this is a notice to join the PADI Diving Society which for the most part is a subscription to the magazine Sport Diver.

The way that PADI sends out the notice makes it look like you have to pay a membership for your diving certification.

There is no annual fee to be a PADI Open Water Diver. The first point that you have to pay annual dues is at the Divemaster level.

By joining PADI Diving Society you receive Sport Diver Magazine and a book full of coupons and discounts from around the world. I personally enjoy the magazine greatly. Sure, some of it is fluff but it has good info all the same. The coupons can easily pay for the membership every year. Oh, and many offers include a neat little carryon travel bag that is handy.

You'll have plenty of negative folks repeat the "pay another dollar in" slogan just because they can. I still think the Society is a worthwhile membership. Try it for a year and decide for yourself.
