I've never used any of the coupons but I do like to read the magazine fluff ads and all

Just to clarify, you were asked to join PADI dive society which is the "non-pro" arm of PADI. To be a member of PADI itself you would need to have at least a divemaster status (and therefore a professional of the "Professional Association of Dive Instructors" or PADI) and there would be an annual fee to stay "current".

For your standard dive certifications there is no further obligation (although one should have fun with it). I think the magazine is pretty good, but I can't read and like the pictures.

sigourneya:
I am new to diving and I have received notices to pay for PADI membership. What are the benefits, if any, of doing so? Do I have to in order to keep my certification up to date?
Thanks for your answer.

PADI membership is for PADI dive professional levels like divemasters onward. So the notice you get is for the "society" thingy others has pointed. In the aspects of benefits, it is all up to the individuals if those are benefitial to them or not.

You don't need to pay anything in additional to keep your certification up-to-date.

Hope this helps.

What exactly do you get from being a member of PADI???

A professional membership is required to be an active DM, AI or instuctor. You cannot work with the PADI program without it. Training updates etc are mailed quarterly as well as other pertanent information for being a DM, AI or Instructor.

The society thing comes with (or at least used to) the professional membership and as other have said, its basically a magazine subscription.

I have been a member of the PADI Diving Society for four years and very much enjoy reading the articles on differnet diving locations around the world and in particularly the information on dive sites in the U.S. The other articles they print are informative and yes, they maybe a little biased to the advertisers. The coupon book you receive is good if you travel or live in an area where you can take advantage of the savings.
Is it worth the money, you'll have to decide that!

The membership benefits are clearly advertised in whatever mailing you have received. I don't think PADI is deceptive, and you are paying for a magazine subscription. The price is not out of line with other subscriptions, and the rag is generally good even if they sometimes go above and beyond to push PADI objectives, and congratulate PADI achievements.

If you like the SportDiver magazine, then join PADI. If you do not, then throw away the notices, and just enjoy diving.

So Sigourneya, there you have it.

It seems that if you pay the sub you get a colourful monthly diving magazine from the organisation who certified you.

As a diver you'll probably enjoy it. I would. At least, that is, until I turn into a cynical wise*****e with nothing better to do than keep posting anti PADI codswallop..... :-)
