I have heard a few times now that there is such a course known as the PADI Shark Diver. My MSDT instructor says she's never heard of this. I found a website on this but is it actually true? Is it an old relic certification perhaps?

Sounds a bit fishy to me (and my instructor)

Distinctive specialty

So this sounds legit then?

Yeah, why not?

Yes, it's legit. See the link below. I've dove at the shop where this specific course is offered, have dove with the instructor and they are a PADI 5 Star shop.

They indicate that some of the funds go to help the Shark Legacy Project itself which, as I've been told, played a large role in the recent move to ban shark fishing in Honduras. That being the case, here's my $$.

But if you have any questions, call PADI. It's not going to get you anything towards AOW or master diver, but it sounds like an interesting and exciting course.

XS-NRG,

Ask your Instructor to explain about "Distinctive Specialties". I will bet there are a lot of courses offered that she has not heard of. It does not mean they do not exist.

One developed and taught by a local instructor is: "Rocky Mountain Diver". She might not have heard of that either. There are many more.

Really? That's pretty cool. So how do these distinctive specialties get created? Does a course director just come up with something? Is there a list of all these distinctive courses?

I saw one somewhere. Can't remember where, either! But yes, there are a lot of them out there.

An Instructor creates an outline with knowledge sessions , required dives, prerequisites and any other subject matter they feel is needed. They then submit it to the agency for review and approval. If they do not like something they kick it back and you 'tweak' it a bit and soon enough it is approved.

You want to try underwater bowling?
