First of all, awesome website. This had been incredible informative to me.

I am writing with another Newbie Question. I am headed on vacation in a month and want to do some diving. I have taken two resort courses, but want to move beyond them. I do not have time to do a full OW, but saw that a dive shop in PDC offers a "PADI Scuba Diver" Course.

It sounds like a Resort Course+, basically, but no where could I find specifics on what it would allow me to do. I understand that different shops have different rules, but does anyone know, generally, what would it allow. As close as I can figure it's (in effect) a temporary OW cert that would allow me to do dives to about 60' (with demonstrated proficiency) while accompanied by DM/DI or above during this stay only. Does this sound about right?

Thanks from Columbus.

PADI SCUBA Diver Course

You can't spend one more day getting real OW training...?

PADI, takes 2 weekends and one more day. NAUI, I don't know, but it is about the same, maybe one extra day. No matter who you take the course from PADI, NAUI, YMCA, it is up to you to select a good insturctor and do your homework. You can often tailor the course to your needs by doing say one day a month until you finish. Just my $0.02 (and my wife says I owe change).

Good luck and good diving.

Most places will give you all the confined water dive training there at home, then you can go on vacation and just have to finish up your "open water" dives for full certification. It's probably a little more expensive (you'll be spreading the $$ between two shops), but it would allow you to do the ful OW Cert .. then you can dive all you want !

Having completed the classroom and pool dives (2 full days, or several evenings), SCUBA Diver requires 2 Open Water dives. Open Water certification only requires 2 more Open Water dives, which must be done on an additional day. So close, and probably the same price--do the Open Water.

SCUBA Diver limits you to diving with a professional(Divemaster or above) on all dives. The Open Water cert will allow you to dive with anyone you so desire, at any time!!

Do all your pool and text work at home. Then, as Islandhopper ssugggested, do you O/W dives on vacation and this will get your certification out of the way.

PADI Scuba Diver requires (at a minimum) the first 3 classroom sections, first 3 pool sessions, and first 2 open water dives of the full Open Water course.

A PADI Scuba Diver certification comes with several limits. The maximum depth for future dives is 40ft, and you must be accompanied by a PADI pro (DM, OWSI, or higher). This is essentially the same limits that would apply to someone who has completed only the Discover Scuba Diving "resort course", though you would not need to repeat the classroom and pool section each trip.

To upgrade from PADI Scuba Diver to PADI Open Water requires the completion of the last 2 classroom sessions (including the final exam), the last 2 pool sessions, and the last 2 open water dives. The upgrade may be completed at any time with any PADI instructor.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I agree wholeheartedly, and plan on getting my OW cert. The only reason I considered this option was that I will not have time, due to my career, to get my OW cert, or even in-class portion done to do a referral (I work WAAAYYY TOO MUCH) in before my vacation in 4 weeks.

The main advantages of the Scuba Diver course are transferrability which I do not have with the resort courses I have taken. I was hoping this would open doors to different dives, but obviously this isn't the case; it just means I will have to complete an OW cert when I return home before next vacation.

Thanks for the info.
