NEW,

couple things...

Deliberate troll? There are undeliberate trolls?

Your right, I don't have much to contribute to this board as there are plenty of others who are doing the contributing. As far as who I am and what I do away from this board is a whole other story. I'll have my dive buddy for Bonaire post a trip report when we get back and then you can make a better judgement.

Its good to be back.

No, seriously?

How can it be since you need to have been a certified diver for at least 6 (six) months before you enter IDC?

Bashing is sometimes necessary, but please check the facts before you start!

Possibly the advert was misleading (by which I mean unclear not deliberately attempting to mislead) - I'll have another look at it and come back.

Question regarding the 6 month bit - I checked out the PADI site and the only experience requirement I could find was the number of dives required which means that you could easily get from nothing to Assistant Instructor in 8 weeks.

Check here under "what do I need to start"; it clearly states "hold a dive certification for at least six months": http://www.padi.com/english/common/courses/pro/owsi.asp

As a matter of fact, "to attend an Instructor Examination, the candidate must have been a certified diver for at least twelve months and have at least 100 logged dives (exeptions may include PADI 5 Star Career Development Center candidates.) " from PADI's General Standards and Proceedures p.31

I'm not sure what the comment that I highlighted in bold type means but it suggests that some candidates might sit for the IE with less dives or experience. I'll have to check it out.

6 months is still nothing .A person who has only been diving 6 months has no business instructing .

Absolutely, that's why I'm waiting until 2006, that'll be 6 years for me, and I hope to be up at least to 300 dives (I'm halfway there now).

You can't be serious....why would someone even contemplate being an instructor after only having 1 year of diving experience. Idon't care if you've made 1000 dives in that year....there's no way you could have experienced enough to be a respectable Instructor after only 1 year of experience in the water.

I don't even want to hear about the 5-star crock of crap...does that mean I'm smarter b/c I took my classes at Purdue as opposed to a community college....who cares same material....same Prof. Egr. exam. This is why the quality of the diving industry is falling.

The requirement is 6 months and until recently it was a year.

I have been looking for an instructor to help me for the entire three years I've had a shop (I finally have one). A while back I spent some time trying out a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer who got his entire rating done at one of the big schools in Florida. To clearify for those who may not be familiar with the rating it requires that you be rated to teach five specialties and have certified at least 25 students. Anyway this instructor assisted me with a class and I tried to have him teach certain portions. However we ran into a snag. Aparently he has a problem speaking in front of a group of people and was determined that I do all the briefings after trying once.

How did he ever certify 25 divers without speaking? He also didn't seem to be familiar enough with the material (class content) to teach it. Needless to say he never tought a class for us.

I am sure you will be a very good instructor .I wish more divers who wanted to be instructors were concerned about gaining experience beyond the bare minimum required.

Everybody play nice! It's almost time for a calm relaxing weekend, and we can all go diving if we want to, or we can bash each others brains out on the board!
