A question for our PADI Course Directors or PADI IE examiners,

Do you allow IDC participants to use a BP and Wing set-up on an IDC course? Not the entire hogarthian set-up, just the BP and Wing BC set-up. This is the "hardcore" BP and wing which is composed of a stainless steel backplate, STA, one piece webbing harness and a 30lb OMS wing.

Does PADI discourage the use of this type of BC?

I am sure you can do the course in a BP/W or a wrap around style or back inflate BCD and you won't get any grief from a CD (PADI) as long as you can demonstrate and perform all the required skills. However, I would think that to be successful, you need to teach in the exact same equipment your students are in. It's much easier for them if thier instructor has the same gear they use.

I dive a BP/W or a BCD off of the rental rack which ever is appropriate.

I did my IDC/IE in BP/Wing as well as longhose. I had no problems with either portion, I don't see why they would have any issues with this setup? The longhose thing is like having one of those usless safe seconds (the ones attached to your inflator/deflator) when you do OOA skills you would donate your primary to the student if you have longhose or safe second. I belive they even mention the use of safe second in the padi video. As for the BP/Wing the only strange thing is when showing BC removal/replacement you have to explain the diff to the students because I have found that after I demo the skill the students go to release their weight belts instead of the BC clip. I figure when I'm releasing my waist strap it must look simillar to undoing the wieght belt. Everything else is still the same left arm first....etc...I also found it easier to clip of primary reg and swithc to bungee before commencing the demo. Try teaching rescue and using BP/Wing when u are the victim, that will really give them something to think about.

Cancun Mark (PADI CD) actively encourages IDC students to use a BP/Wing and long hose. The only part of Hogarthian that doesn't seem to fit in is the fact that PADI requires the use of a snorkel. Pretty sure they get around this by stowing it when at depth.
